Can people live in peace together when deeply held beliefs and views are in conflict?
Yes, it depends. Because most people will argue in favor of their beliefs if they are strongly believed in, but people understand that not everyone will have the same beliefs as them, so there is a certain compromise. No Because when there are different beliefs, usually they clash, and cause uprising which disrupt the peace.
Should the international community play a role in helping countries establish self-determination?
The international community should help only if the country is not stable and cannot do things on their own. When a country is not stable, they may need help from others, so this help from the international community is essential. No because then all countries will be looking to each other for help, and it will only erupt more trouble than what should be.
Is it ever OK for victims to become the persecutors?
No, because then it will become a two-way war with no end and most likely not a great ending, thus preventing the peace in that nation & to the victims. This starts a never ending cycle of war that only leads to death and no peace.
Is violence justified when access to resources is cut off?
In some cases, yes. If people are not given the opportunity to have resources to survive, some violence is necessary for people to survive. They have to turn to some sort of violence and survival tactics in order to survive.
Does the Holocaust excuse Israel from overreaching partition boundaries with Palestine?
The message of this video is that when countries like Israel and Palestine have a conflict, self-defense is definitely necessary, and shouldn't be looked at like it is in elementary school. Things are more serious with world conflicts, and countries will fight back if they are being targeted. In this video, the smaller boy is representative of Palestine and the bigger boy that is fighting back represents Israel. This video is biased toward Israel.
In the late 1880's a group of Zionists traveled to Palestine to see what it offered as a Jewish homeland. One Zionist said, when he returned to Europe;
"The Bride is beautiful but she is married to another man"
What was meant by this quote:
This means that what Palestine has to offer is great for the Jewish, but that Palestine belongs to the Arabs. The Zionist is saying that the land belongs to the Arabs. He's trying to say that it would be a beautiful homeland for the Jewish, but it is now married to the Arabs. The Arabs and the Palestine's now live together. They knew there was going to be some sort of complications.
1. What information did you find most interesting about the conflict from this portion of the reader?
What I found most interesting about this conflict was that the main problem were the different religions. It was interesting to me that the Palestine land holds sometype of value for all the religions involved in the conflict. 2. Explain and give examples of how other nations and international organizations impacted the conflict.
International organizations got involved when they came up with ideas to try to solve the conflict. One example was when Britian tried to split the Palestine land between the Palestrinians and Israel. Also, the US added fule to the fire when they provided Israel with weapons. When ever they tried to solve the conflict, it just made things worse.
Five Observations:
1897- It started out all yellow which means the land belonged all to Palestine.
1946- A little bit of green showed up- Orthodox Jews scattered in different areas.
1947- U.N. Partition Plan. Palestine lost the majority of its land in just a year. It was split about 50/50.
Caused the Arab-Israel wars because Palestinians felt that they were being kicked out of their own land and being outcasted by the Jews and the United Nations.
The six-day war left the land divided into six sections.
Part 2 Guide Q's Reflection:
1.How did the UN try to keep peace in the region?
Peace was kept by creating the partition plan which was going to separate western Palestine into two separate states--slowly transitions into being Israel's land. 2.How did war impact the region?
It left a large number of citizens dead and also damaged much of the land, damages that were hard to recover from. It also left the land divided into three parts. Israel is getting bigger as a result of war 1/ Reflect on the treatment of Palestinian refugees
The Palestine refugees were treated very unfairly, this is mainly what caused to get outraged at the way they were being treated when they came in and took their land. They were treated like second hand citizens to the Jewish, because they're trying to get rid of all the Palestinians.
Part 3 Guide Qs Reflection:
1. What role did the international community play in the 1967 War?
In the 1967 War, the international community got involved as they got in the middle of the six day war. The United States was allies with Israel, Britain and France attacked Egypt, and the Soviet Union misinformed the Syrian government. 2. How can "language be used to one's advantage? (UN resolution 242)
Language can be used to one's advantage as they can take it to mean something different than it means as they can use special words or wording that mean something different in one language then another language. This happened in the UN Resolution 242 where the English version said something different then the French one so Israel used the English one to their advantage so they would not give back all the land 3. Evaluate the treatment of Palestinian refugees by Israelis after the war? what are some possible reasons for this treatment?
Palestinians refugees were treated as second class citizens by the Israelis. They did not have basic civil and political rights and were not treated as fairly as the Israeli citizens were. They were also punished. They may have been treated this way as Israel was afraid they may be terrorists and was trying to protect their country.
Six Day War Video Notes:
Syrian Ambassador says Israel has excessive cease-fire-systematic
Soviet Union gets involved as they the United States is involved with Israel
USSR wanted sanctions but the UN said no
Israel says their victory takes away past armistice agreements
Israel has taken two holy cities and has taken over many lands
Israel demoralizes Palestinian army group
700 Israeli troops wounded
Did not destroy anything in religious cities
Many countries said Israel was too aggressive and should push back, Israel said they will decide their own fate
President of Egypt resigned
Reflection on Part 4 Guide Questions: Evaluate Israel's response to the 1st Intifada. How could it have been handled differently?
There were many acts of civil disobedience taking place, which resulted in Israel taking part in massive arrests. Between 1987-1991, Israeli forces killed over 1,000 Palestinians, 200 under 16. This could have been handled in a non violent way, as it stirred up more conflict
Evaluate the US role in the peace attempts in the region. What were the causes of successes and failures?
The United Sates served as a mediator between the two countries but they supported Israel. They worked to make agreements but also added military aid. There were times where the United states was more firm with Israel, and some believed that they should have been stronger towards Israel.
Assess the role of Israel and the PLO in attempts at peace.
Israel worked to have peace talks, but feared the terrorists as well as the Hamas groups. The Hamas was their biggest fear, and they did not want to have to give away their own land and shrink the size of Israel.
Reflection questions on Guide Questions 5: 1. Discuss the viewpoint of the Israelis and the Palestinians on the barrier between Israel and the West Bank.
The Israeli were in favor of it and they knew that it was impossible for them to conquer the west bank so they just built the wall, and the Palestinians didn't like the wall because it made entering and exiting the sides very hard, they didn't want to be separated. 2. What do you see as the major stumbling blocks in the attempted peace talks discussed in this section?
It wasn't going very well and also the plan Obama tried to put into play wasn't working well as his administration has been holding him back. He hasn't been able to do much about this yet. Instead of including so many people in these meetings, they should have included only the countries involved.
Reflection Questions on Guide Questions 6:
1. Do you think Palestine should be a full member of the UN? Why or why not?
I don't think they should become a member of the United Nations because they aren't a full nation completely yet. There is a conflict going on there at the moment and I believe that neither Israel nor Palestine should be allowed to be a full member. 2. Evaluate how a lasting peace could be achieved in this conflict. Give specific evidence from your work
I believe that lasting peace could be achieved if they performed better peace talks and if they could come to an agreement of splitting the land into halves, half to each side.
Evaluate Israel's response to the 1st Intifada. How could it have been handled differently? Israel engaged in massive arrests since they were under many forms of civil disobedience, Many leaders of the intifada were put in jail as the movement lost its “power”. They had death squads, they put people in jails for very long periods of time. They could have used more diplomatic means instead of jailing and even killing.
Evaluate the US role in the peace attempts in the region. What were the causes of successes and failures?
The US tried to create piece between the two by passing a peace agreement but it wasnt accepted by both sides. President Bush tried pressuring Israeli prime minister. There were times where the U.S. was very firm with Israel, demanding them to do stuff.
Assess the role of Israel and the PLO in attempts at peace.
